Major concerns over pedestrian safety

Ninety-two pedestrians died between 1 January and 30 September this year in accidents involving vehicles and 696 pedestrians were injured.
This is according to the spokesperson of the Namibian police, adj. comm. Kauna Shikwambi, in a statement released last week.
Oshana recorded the most pedestrian deaths with 15, while Ohangwena and Kavanga East regions reported 12 deaths each.
The Oshikoto region reported 11 deaths while all other regions reported less than 10 pedestrian deaths.
However, Khomas is the biggest concern, with 313 injuries, while the Erongo region recorded 84 and the Oshana region recorded 66 injuries.
Both motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to keep safety in mind when using the roads.
Motorists were reminded of their duty to report an accident and to ascertain injuries.
The police attribute an increase in the use of mobile devices as a possible contributing factor to these alarming figures and say speed is also a cause for concern.
