Mansfield hosts seventh solo exhibition
Local artist Michael Mansfield's paintings are currently exhibited at the Project Room Gallery.Over the past few decades, Mansfield has been collecting props, mainly toys, for this exhibition entitled Still Life Stories. As the toy collection grew, so did the idea of an exhibition around this concept.
Still Life Stories is Mansfield’s seventh solo exhibition and has been in the making for several years. In a time-consuming process, the artist staged every detail of his stories with his toy props to capture them with oil on canvas.
The stories told in his still lifes reflect on life becoming more serious as one gets older. Mansfield’s distinctive reference to historical works of art and events is still evident in his works entitled “The Last Supper” and “The Birth of Venus”.
The works that form part of Still Life Stories mainly consist of colourful oil paintings and contrasting black and white watercolour / ink paintings of everyday objects.
Mansfield spent most of his life in Swakopmund where he still lives and works. Where his current works consist mainly of oil paintings on canvas as well as watercolour and ink on paper, the artist has exhibited his excellent drawing skills in previous exhibitions as well as created three-dimensional works in the form of dioramas.
The exhibition can be viewed until 21 May. The Project Room Gallery (32 Jenner Street, Windhoek West) is open Tuesdays to Saturdays between 10:00 and 13:00.
