According to the City of Windhoek's Senior Station Officer, Fillipus Sikongo, the fire has been actively fought outside the capital for two days. "A team of around 20 firefighters, supported by farmers and employees of Heja Lodge with their vehicles, were deployed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to Elisenheim Estate and Heja Lodge," according to the City of Windhoek.
Firebreaks were cut and the spread of the fire was controlled. "However, the fire is now moving northeast, into an area of steep terrain making vehicle access difficult, and a rapid assessment is being conducted to develop a new strategy." that the fire is under control for the time being. “At Elisenheim, the goal was to contain the fire in the northern and southern reaches of the mountains. However, the remaining part of the fire line to the northeast, located on the high and steep Elisenheim mountaintop, is still burning and could potentially be moving towards Heja Lodge.”
The City of Windhoek has also received reports of another fire at Ongos farm. "We would like to reassure local residents that the City of Windhoek is working diligently to put out these fires."
