Gobabis Woermann Brock burns down
The Woermann Brock supermarket in Gobabis caught fire in the early hours of yesterday morning. The fire reportedly broke out at around 06:00 and the municipal firefighting team battled the flames for almost three hours. The cause of the blaze is still unclear, but an investigation is underway.
Braam van Niekerk, Group Managing Director of Woermann Brock said that “at this stage, we cannot confirm the full extent of the damage caused by the fire. Investigations are ongoing and we will share further details as they become available”.
According to Van Niekerk, the rapid spread of the fire is suspected to have been caused by flammable materials typically found in supermarkets.
Van Niekerk confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported.
A similar incident occurred at the Woermann Brock store in Windhoek's Ombili in October last year, where the fire also caused extensive damage.
Van Niekerk stressed that there is no connection between the two incidents. "The cause of the fire in the Ombili store has been identified and does not indicate any connection with the event here. At this stage, we have no information that shows any similarities or connections that would justify further investigation in this regard." Photos contributed
