Empowering Namibians with free financial education
Through its "On the Money" programme, Old Mutual, a leading financial services provider in Namibia, continues to offer comprehensive and completely free financial education to employer groups across the country. This initiative not only equips Namibians with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage their finances effectively but also provides added value to both employees and organisations alike.
"Financial education is not just about providing information; it's about empowering individuals to make informed decisions that positively impact their financial well-being," said Mignon du Preez, Group Marketing, Public Affairs, and Sustainability Executive at Old Mutual Namibia. "Our 'On the Money' programme is completely free for employers and employees, removing any barriers to access. This added value extends beyond individuals to organisations, fostering a financially savvy workforce that can contribute to their overall success."
The programme's role in Namibia goes beyond individual empowerment; it plays a crucial role in fostering financial education and literacy at a national level. By providing accessible and practical financial education, 'On the Money' contributes to building a financially resilient society, where individuals have the knowledge and skills to navigate complex financial decisions confidently.
Poor financial habits
"Our research has shown that poor financial habits are at the root of poor money management. Many people know what to do - they have basic knowledge and motivation - but they do not always apply it in their daily lives. 'On the Money' targets this by helping people see how easy it is to start new habits and break old approaches," Du Preez added.
The objectives of the programme include helping people break old habits that hinder financial stability and establish worthwhile new ones. 'On the Money' teaches the habit of proactive saving, which is the basis of all good money management. It also demonstrates how to create powerful, clear, and specific short-, medium-, and long-term visions that are realistic, achievable, and inspiring. Additionally, the programme guides participants on how to tackle debt efficiently and how to protect assets and grow wealth through wise investments.
In 2023, Old Mutual provided face-to-face training to 5 221 individuals and offered multimedia training to more than 1.4 million Namibians through the "On the Money" programme, reaching diverse audiences. This milestone underscores Old Mutual's commitment to promoting financial inclusion and literacy in Namibia.
The programme draws inspiration from Namibia's Big Five animals, providing practical insights into managing finances. Employers interested in offering free financial education to their staff can book training sessions by contacting [email protected].
