Big numbers for Maths Olympiad
The Old Mutual Namibia Foundation invested N$100 000 towards the final round of the 2024 National Mathematics Olympiad (NMO), hosted by the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology. The NMO attracts mathematically gifted high school learners from across Namibia, to test their problem-solving skills. This year, 84 learners, representing the top six from each region, will travel to Windhoek to participate in the final. The overall top six (three boys and three girls) will go on to represent Namibia at the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMA) in 2025.
The NMO not only promotes excellence in mathematics but also serves as a platform to popularise science and technology among students, educators, and the wider community. By encouraging learners to challenge themselves in solving complex problems, the competition helps foster a deeper interest in scientific studies.
The competition kicks off with the arrival of participants in Windhoek on 10 September, where they will undergo a day of preparation. The main event will take place on 12 September, as students will engage in a four-hour mathematics test, designed to push their limits and showcase their knowledge.
During the award ceremony on 13 September the overall winner, best female participant, and the top six learners, who will represent Namibia at PAMA will be announced.
Chief executive of the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology Anicia Peters expressed their gratitude for the donation.
