City shows off its boreholes
The City of Windhoek (CoW) along with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform and various stakeholders, commemorated World Wetlands Day, International Day of Forests and World Water Day last week. The theme for this year was “Groundwater too precious for people, forests, and wetlands-making the invisible, visible”.
The events highlighted the importance of exploring, protecting, and sustainably using groundwater. As part of the commemoration, the City’s Bulk Water and Waste Water Division hosted learners from various schools in the capital for an excursion to the city’s boreholes. The aim was to raise awareness of Windhoek’s underground recharge stations and how the city secures and supplies water to residents.
During the excursion, CoW's Section Engineer of Mechanical & Electrical Jacobus Theron, said that the City’s borehole scheme is a finite resource that must be carefully managed and nurtured to remain sustainable.
Windhoek councillor Austin Kwenani reaffirmed the City’s commitment to preserving groundwater. In his message at the round-up of the celebrations at Safari Hotel, he said that the Windhoek Municipality is committed to proactively protecting and preserving our water resources and ensuring that this invisible, yet vital resource continues to sustain future generations.
