IOL achieves milestone

Completes NCHE audit, launches new advisory board
The Institute for Open Learning (IOL) has completed its Institutional Audit Improvement Process, as verified by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). The NCHE’s review of IOL’s audit improvement report confirmed that all audit requirements were met, underscoring IOL’s commitment to high standards in open and distance learning.
In a letter dated October 14, 2024, NCHE Deputy Executive Director Sylvia Demas praised IOL’s dedication to quality, encouraging ongoing quality assurance. This milestone highlights IOL’s contributions to Namibian education, with 62,692 registered students since its 2005 acquisition, 5 697 currently enrolled, and 16 218 graduates.
“We are pleased with the NCHE audit results, reinforcing our commitment to academic quality and excellence in education,” said IOL’s CEO of Education, Ilana Calitz.
Academic Advisory Board
Following NCHE’s recommendation, IOL has established an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) to enhance academic oversight, especially in qualification approvals and quality assurance. The AAB will provide strategic advice to support IOL’s alignment with both national and global education standards. This consultative body will guide IOL’s leadership, developing policies and ensuring high academic standards across all qualifications.
“The AAB is a valuable addition that will strengthen IOL’s commitment to accessible, high-calibre education,” said Calitz. “Their expertise will guide us in maintaining academic standards and aligning with best practices.”
The AAB will focus on programme accreditation, institutional audits, quality frameworks, and tracking trends in higher education to support IOL’s continuous improvement. Recommendations from the AAB will go to IOL’s board, ensuring alignment with governance and quality objectives.
