Global African Hydrogen Summit this September
The Global African Hydrogen Summit, unveiled at COP28 UAE in December 2023 and scheduled for Windhoek from 3 – 5 September 2024 aims to channel critical investments into bankable African green energy projects, drawing the attention of global heads of state, ministers and CEOs.Preceding the summit, an international press conference is set for 18 April 2024, in Windhoek. Minister of Mines & Energy, Tom Alweendo, highlights the significance of this summit as a groundbreaking opportunity for African governments, investors, financiers, scholars, and the public.
The event will showcase hydrogen projects integral to the energy strategies of countries such as Angola, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, and South Africa.
Recent developments include Egypt's signing of seven agreements worth $40 billion for green hydrogen projects over a decade, and TotalEnergies and Chariot Group completing a feasibility study for a proposed 10 GW green hydrogen project in Mauritania. Namibia also progresses towards its green industrialization vision with support for the U$10 billion Hyphen Green hydrogen project.
From Ambition to Action
Endorsed by the Namibian Government's Ministry of Mines and Energy, and supported by the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, the summit adopts the theme From Ambition to Action: Fuelling Africa’s Green Industrial Revolution.
It will address six thematic pillars, including developing Africa's hydrogen market, fostering partnerships, stimulating investment, promoting innovation, enabling green industrialization, and enhancing local capacity and skills.
Renewable hydrogen, sourced from solar, wind, and hydropower, promises to revolutionize energy systems by ensuring security, clean power generation, and decarbonisation of various industries. McKinsey & Company estimates that through collaboration, African hydrogen-producing countries could meet both domestic and export demands by 2050.
The dynamic three-day summit will feature a strategic conference with leadership dialogues, over 100 expert speakers, investment roundtables for bankable projects, and a large-scale international exhibition. A Startup H2ub incubator and a youth program will also be integral parts of the event, fostering innovation and inclusivity.
