Green hydrogen: Bridging academia and industry

Staff reporter
The Namibia Green Hydrogen Safety and Power-to-X (PtX) Conference and Tour is set to take place from 5 to 7 March 2025, bringing together students, researchers and industry leaders to enhance Namibia’s role in the global green hydrogen economy.
Hosted at Arebbusch Travel Lodge in Windhoek, the event concludes with a tour of the Cleanergy Green Hydrogen Fuelling Station in Walvis Bay. Designed specifically for Youth for Green Hydrogen (Y4GH) scholars and DAAD Green Hydrogen Scholarship recipients, the conference offers young researchers a platform to present their work and network with industry professionals. In-person attendance is by invitation only, but virtual participation is available for attendees in Namibia and Germany.
The conference will feature distinguished keynote speakers, including Prof Erold Naomab, Vice Chancellor of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST); Dr Zivayi Chiguvare, Acting Director of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Research Institute at the University of Namibia (UNAM); and Prof James Katende, Professor of Renewable Energy Systems at NUST.
Industry experts from Hyphen, BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing), GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), and NCRST (National Commission on Research, Science and Technology) will contribute to discussions on financing, safety standards, and technological advancements in the green hydrogen sector.
The event aims to foster collaboration between academia and industry, supporting innovation and sustainable economic growth. Participants will gain valuable insights into safety protocols, entrepreneurship, and workforce development in the evolving green hydrogen market.
Besides visiting the Cleanergy Fuelling Station on the final day, attendees will also take part in masterclass sessions designed to boost employability and career prospects in the sector.
The event is primarily sponsored by DAAD, reinforcing the significance of international collaboration in advancing Namibia’s green hydrogen ambitions.
