Artificial nesting boxes for penguins

Last week, the Namibian Foundation for the Conservation of Seabirds, in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Namibia Nature Foundation, successfully set up and installed 25 artificial nesting boxes on Possession Island. "As natural nesting sites are becoming increasingly scarce due to guano removal and erosion, these artificial nests are crucial to improving nesting opportunities and increasing the breeding success of African penguins," says the NNF. Artificial nests have proven their worth and are used in various designs around the world, including successfully for Humboldt and Galapagos penguins as well as for little penguins in Australia and New Zealand. "Our artificial nests not only improve the microclimate for penguins, eggs and chicks but also provide protection from predators and reduce energy requirements." Photos: NNF
