Development planned for Avis Dam
Gondwana Collection, PSG Wealth and Greenspace Namibia have joined forces to support the development of the Avis Dam into a centre for conservation, recreation and community engagement. In a newly formulated memorandum of understanding, they commit to sustainability, visitor wellbeing and safety, and environmental protection.
“This non-profit initiative aims to preserve and enhance the Avis Dam as a vibrant community area, with a focus on improving recreational opportunities, developing an environmental information centre and promoting the area as a world-class urban conservation and educational site,” said Gondwana. Plans include improved walking trails with clear trail markings, the introduction of information boards to educate and entertain visitors, improved digital integration of the Avis Dam forums, and promoting collaboration with new partners and potential investors.
"A modern information centre at the main entrance and a digital platform - including a user-friendly mobile app - will provide visitors with up-to-date information on activities, trails and events, while simplifying the payment of entrance fees," it says.
This collaboration is intended to bring together resources and expertise to enhance the ecological, recreational and educational value of the Avis Dam. Greenspace Namibia will act as a leaseholder on behalf of the City of Windhoek to oversee the daily operations, maintenance and implementation of the master plan. Gondwana and PSG Wealth will support these efforts and further drive the success and sustainability of the Avis Dam as a public open space.
This initiative is intended to mark the beginning of a new era for the Avis Dam and ensure that it remains a valued natural space for future generations.
