Global Water-Energy Nexus Innovation Challenge launched
Capricorn Foundation joins forces with UNIDO, NGIN and CcHUB
The Capricorn Foundation, alongside the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the Network for Global Innovation (NGIN), and Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB) Namibia, has launched the global Just Transition to the Future (JTF) Water-Energy Nexus Open Innovation Challenge. This initiative seeks to discover and advance innovative solutions for the water and energy challenges facing drought-prone regions in Namibia.Part of UNIDO’s Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP), this challenge supports just energy transitions by fostering collaboration between private sector partners and innovators. “This initiative aligns with GCIP’s goal to accelerate Just Energy Transitions, addressing critical water-energy challenges with scalable solutions,” said Olga Rataj, GCIP Programme Lead.
The Capricorn Foundation has invested N$300,000 in the challenge, which will support prize money, project development on the SKILD platform, and other implementation costs. Participants are tasked with designing integrated solutions that use renewable energy for water management technologies, such as water recycling, energy-efficient distribution, and water-saving infrastructure. The aim is to improve energy efficiency and water conservation in drought-prone areas, generating scalable solutions adaptable across Namibia and beyond.
“By supporting initiatives like this, Capricorn Foundation reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and local community empowerment,” said Marlize Horn, Executive Officer of the Capricorn Foundation.
The JTF challenge targets sustainable systems for sectors such as farming, industry, and households, focusing on the water-energy nexus—a critical issue for communities facing water scarcity and energy inefficiency. Entries are open until 17 January 2024.
“This initiative is a major step towards real-world solutions for water and energy sustainability,” stated Fred Walti, CEO of NGIN. “We are eager to see the innovative ideas that emerge to benefit local communities and industries.”
As Namibia contends with water scarcity and energy inefficiency, this challenge represents a significant move towards a sustainable future, engaging innovators in solutions that foster resilience in a changing climate.
