LAC announces winners of School Comic Competition

The Legal Assistance Centre announced the winners of their Wildlife Crime Comic Competition.
First prize went to Ontana Combined School in the Oshikoto Region for their comic titled “Water Smuggling. The borehole water business councillor” by Naftal Amupolo, winning N$30 000 in kind.
Onguti Senior Secondary School, also from the Oshikoto Region, won second place for their comic titled “Illegal fishing” by Edward David and Johannes Jonas who won N$15 000 in kind.
In third place is Delta Secondary School Windhoek with its comic titled “Save the Pangolins” produced by the EcoClub of the school, winning them N$5 000 in kind.
The director of the LAC, Toni Hancox, congratulated the winning schools, saying she is happy about the quality of entries received overall. “We have seen a big improvement compared to last year’s entries and it gives me hope that our learners are advancing in environmental education. We thank all schools for participating in this important project, and I hope we can continue with this competition in the years to come.”
Awareness creation
The LAC held a second comic competition this year encouraging schools nationwide to participate in this activity raising awareness of environmental protection. The LAC received 53 entries from 28 schools, representing ten regions.
A wide area of topics were covered by the comics entered. The themes covered were, among others: poaching of various animal species, illegal wildlife trade, illegal fishing, illegal dumping of waste in the ocean, water pollution, illegal sand mining, deforestation, illegal fires and littering.
The winning comics were selected based on originality, art, character, storyline and the presence of any legal components.
