Population explosion of stray dogs and cats curbed

The mobile veterinary clinic of Dr. Ian Baines has been fighting the overpopulation of stray dogs and cats for the past seven years by providing free spaying, neutering and vaccinations at the Animal Hospital. The extreme overpopulation of stray dogs and cats causes major animal welfare, biodiversity and human health problems worldwide.
With a total of 15 000 animals treated so far by Dr. Baines, population growth has been curbed, thus preventing hybridization with wild species and the spread of disease.
Filmmaker Ruben de Kemp and Semme de Loor from the Netherlands have been following Dr. Baines and his team for a month. With their documentary, A Starfish Story, the duo wants to show the extent of the overpopulation problem.
"While Namibia tends to focus on the 'Big Five', the overpopulation of pets poses a threat not only to animal welfare, but also to biodiversity and human health," a media statement said.
