Sport scientist: Garren Smith
Garren Smith, the founder and owner of Windhoek Pro Sports Performance Academy (WPSPA), is a prime advocate of the benefits of biokinetics. His broad knowledge of sport science and biokinetics has equipped him with skills to provide top-tier services to athletes. "Our holistic approach ensures that athletes not only reach their peak performance, but also maintain their health and well-being throughout their athletic careers," Smith explained.
For the past four years, WPSPA has been at the forefront of providing a wide range of performance-enhancing services. These include performance testing, specialised training camps, strength and conditioning programmes, and expert coaching.
Additionally, the academy offers comprehensive recovery services, such as injury rehabilitation, compression boots, video analysis and ice baths, he said.
Collaborating closely with Namibian athletes and teams, Smith said he has had "the privilege of witnessing their growth and success first-hand, with some players going on to perform at the highest level".
A defining moment came at the Africa Cup of Nations 2023, where he served as the sport scientist for the Brave Warriors senior football team, contributing to their historic first-ever win and progression to the round of 16.
Smith said WPSPA is committed to delivering integrated performance training through a modern, multidisciplinary approach to conditioning and injury rehabilitation. High performance in football is essential as it encompasses advanced training techniques, nutritional guidance and psychological support, all aimed at maximising a player's potential, he said.
Biokinetics is a cornerstone of the services offered at WPSPA. This discipline focuses on improving physical functioning and health through scientifically designed exercise programmes. Biokinetics plays a crucial role in injury prevention, rehabilitation and enhancing athletic performance.
Throughout his career, Smith has been inspired by the words of Nelson Mandela: “Sport has the power to change the world”. This quote serves as a daily reminder of the transformative potential of sport in shaping individuals and communities alike. It has inspired him to utilise sport as a powerful tool to inspire and transform the youth.
