The top three cities on the list of the most dangerous cities in the world are Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria in South Africa, followed by Caracas in Venezuela. Other African cities that are in the top 100 include Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Lagos in Nigeria and Harare in Zimbabwe.
The Numbeo Crime Index is based on data provided by the website's users over the last five years, which may differ from official government statistics.
Numbeo emphasises that the index serves as a comparative tool to assess the relative safety of different cities or countries and allows individuals to understand the crime situation in specific locations.
