Brigitte van Wyk: Audiologist“We perform diagnostic hearing evaluations and treat hearing loss accordingly. Treatment will either consist of hearing aid fittings or a patient will be referred to a specialist for assessment and treatment,” said audiologist Brigitte van Wyk.
Her job features hearing tests, hearing loss diagnosis, hearing aid fittings, report writing and communicating with other disciplines regarding treatment plans.
“If you love working with people and you like making a difference, then audiology is definitely a career you should consider. Make sure you find out from the different universities what their requirements are in terms of subjects and minimum academic requirements. Shadow an audiologist to make sure that it is something you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life,” she urged.
“I loved the idea of helping someone to hear for the first time. I wanted to be part of the moment someone can hear their loved ones speak for the first time.”
