Henriette Lamprecht – With its motto, "Be Free & Creative", it provides a platform for creative expression and nurturing imagination. From creative crafting to bespoke events, crafty workshops, and artsy parties, it helps convert negative energy into positive habits, explains Adonia Mouton, owner of Canvas Club Swakopmund. Established in the coastal town in 2019, it follows the initiative of the founders and owners of the original Canvas Club, Stefanie de Wet and Christelle Janse van Rensburg. Since opening their first club in Cape Town in March of 2018, there are now 40 clubs in South Africa, as well as in Namibia and New Zealand. The aim, says Adonia, was to empower women internationally.
Being in the banking industry for 16 years until 2018, Adonia has a good understanding of needing time to “just let your hair down and relax”.
People absolutely need this in their lives, especially after the Covid-19-pandemic took such a physical and emotional toll on Namibians.
“I strongly believe arts and crafts can help us to convert the negative energy of the past two years into positive habits.”
Canvas Club is not for a certain kind of person, and one doesn’t need to be creative or social, says Adonia, explaining art is not meant to be perfect.
Clients or creatives walk away with a creation they can be proud of.
She's gotten a lot of positive feedback, with many of her clients becoming regulars because of the relaxed nature of the sessions. Currently, the Cork & Colours sessions - combining paint and wine - are very popular, says Adonia, as it is a relaxing art experience paired with other new ventures like sparkling wine and chocolate pairing.
“I don’t like to call it classes, but creative sessions or events. The season, day, or month inspires my creative sessions, workshops, or events. If I have clients with specific theme requests, Canvas Club can curate a session for that.
Currently, the sessions are not as regular as she would like, says Adonia, “but I’m working towards that”.
Canvas Club caters to all ages and for the kids, it offers a Holiday Club for at least two weeks during school holidays. There is also the Artsy Birthday, while during the Canvas Club’s Craft-a-Thon - an all-day event - you get to learn new skills and walk away with four crafts.
Canvas Club also played host to quite a few creative team-building sessions over the past year.
As co-owner of Chic Creative Cottage, an event space for creative events, workshops, parties, meetings, and photo shoots, it is the perfect setting to host Canvas Club creative events. A safe and artsy space to let down your hair and relax. - [email protected]; Facebook: Canvas Club (Swakopmund)
