Palliative Care Fund launched

Assistance for financially vulnerable cancer patients
In pursuit of improved access to palliative and hospice care for financially vulnerable Namibians fighting cancer, Palliative Care Namibia (PCN), a division of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN), officially launched the Palliative Care Fund this week.
The PCF operates under the same administrative and policy guidelines as CAN’s established Patient Financial Assistance Programme, but it is specifically dedicated to raising funds for those in urgent need of end-of-life care support and medication.
"We are receiving numerous requests from the public for nursing care and medication support, including pain relief medication, morphine, and adult diapers, which are often difficult to obtain within the state healthcare system. Purchasing these items from retailers and pharmacies is incredibly costly," explained Rolf Hansen, CAN and PCN chief executive.
The existing financial assistance fund at CAN, with a budget of N$2 million allocated for the current financial year, is already overextended due to high demand. This has necessitated the establishment of a separate fund to provide additional, targeted support for the critical palliative needs of cancer patients facing end-of-life care.
In addition to ongoing training programs for local healthcare workers, PCN appeals to corporations and the business community to pledge their support to help grow the Palliative Care Fund and make a real difference for Namibians in need.
PCN is located at 3 Jan Jonker Road in Windhoek.
