With its 081Every1 campaign aimed at providing network coverage to all Namibians, telecommunications provider MTC only has a mere 2% of the Namibian population to connect before reaching this ambitious goal.
In the past five years, MTC has managed to improve its network coverage from 86% in 2019 to 98% at present, spokesperson Erasmus Nekundi said.
"MTC continuously upgrades and improves its network, expanding its coverage and capacity by building new radio sites and adding additional layers to existing sites," he said.
Since being launched in 2017, the 081Every1 project has seen MTC adding 300 sites to its existing network with these developments, mainly concentrated in rural areas. This has also brought with it a significant milestone for MTC - its 1 000th network tower, which was erected last year.
Through 081Every1, the telecommunications giant has also expanded radio access and started providing 3G and 4G technologies to both urban and rural communities. "To ensure that rural populations benefit from the same experience of mobile broadband as their urban counterparts, MTC upgraded 70% of its active sites to 4G. Although approximately 60% of the rural sites will be non-profit making, MTC took a strategic decision to proceed with them because of the economic opportunities they offer communities," Nekundi said.
