It's a jungle out there

If, like me, you're a fan of the show 'Monk', you may be familiar with the sound of Randy Newman's voice sharing that it's a jungle out there. While modernisation can make us feel far from humanity's history of living in the wild where survival alone was considered the greatest success, we have new uncharted territories to explore in a modern society. This jungle can fit in the palm of your hand and yet stretch wider than your wildest imagination. Fear about artificial intelligence (AI) appears to be growing at a faster pace than the excitement over what it could bring. With this edition, the message is "fear not, reader... but also try not to be stupid about it". With a handful of simple guidelines, you can do your part in keeping safe in the digital jungle and, in doing so, potentially start to see technology for the promise it holds for you and your community.
Namibia and Africa appear excited over the problems that AI can solve, but the experts concur that it remains absolutely vital that we do not neglect to look at the problems AI can bring.
Over the course of creating this edition, several experts concurred that the user (that's you) is the last line of defence, but their preaching - attempting to convert an uneducated public into a digitally literate people - are often riddled with jargon. What on earth is clickjacking and what's this guy named Jack got to do with it anyways?
This edition hopes to demystify the alien jargon and share a glimpse at the hopes of new technologies in Africa as well as provide a look into how Namibia's technology infrastructure relates to Africa and the world.
As a country and a continent looking to get ahead in the race for digitalisation, you and I are vital components in both setting systems in place and safeguarding against the dangers those systems could bring.
