Another N$2.5m for Cancer Apple Project
A total of N$2.5 million was raised in this year’s edition of the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project, bringing the tally to N$38.4 million raised for the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) in the past 24 years of this initiative. The project raises funds through the sale of apples, apple juice and virtual apples via its online platform. This year’s theme, “Is it possible to impact a life?” drew inspiration from Bank Windhoek’s 2024 campaign, “Is it possible to love a bank?”
Bank Windhoek’s Managing Director, Baronice Hans, highlighted the project’s impact, stating that in 2024, 2 210 women were screened through the National Cancer Outreach Programme, leading to 66 referrals for further intervention. Additionally, 331 men underwent prostate screenings, with nine receiving timely treatment at Windhoek Central Hospital. Funds also provided 1 785 bed nights for 230 patients and companions at House Acacia Interim Home, along with 1 706 nights for mother-and-child stays at CHICA Interim Home.
CAN CEO Rolf Hansen emphasised the project’s significance, calling it a Project of Hope for vulnerable cancer patients. In 2024, 718 Namibians sought financial assistance from CAN, while 372 with recurrent diagnoses required continued assistance.
CAN provided N$2.63 million in financial aid for patient transport and food parcels.
According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN), Namibia records 4 100 new cancer cases annually, with 3 453 being invasive and 1 940 deaths per year.
The Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project remains CAN’s primary funding source for nationwide screenings and support services.
Hansen reaffirmed CAN’s dedication to fighting cancer in Namibia, saying, “Despite challenges, this project directly impacts many lives.”
