Cancer patients remain in need
A record 151 Namibian cancer patients applied for and received financial assistance from the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) in February 2023.CAN’s Patient Financial Assistance paid out N$105 700 on 3 March 2023 in support, while transportation support and accommodation support to patients fighting cancer was provided additionally.
CAN has several patient support programmes that include two interim homes, transportation and financial support, while the new palliative care programme aims to support patients in need of rehabilitative, pain and/or end-of-life support.
Financially vulnerable cancer patients are invited to apply with the financial assistance funds, while all cancer patients in need of accommodation while receiving active treatment at Windhoek oncology facilities are welcome to stay at our interim care homes.
State and/or financially vulnerable Namibians receive free treatment at the Dr AB May Cancer Care Centre at Windhoek Central Hospital – a much better treatment option than most African countries to date still, where in some nations no cancer treatment is available at all.
CAN’s support programmes complement both the state and private care options available to strengthen the cancer care continuum in Namibia.
“We all have a specific role to play in bettering the environment for cancer patients in Namibia and as we see the need increases, so too must our support offering expand,” CAN CEO Rolf Hansen said.
