Affordable housing in Africa: Shining the light on success stories

39th annual African Union for Housing Finance Conference and Annual General Meeting
The African continent’s leading affordable housing gathering, the 39th annual African Union for Housing Finance (AUHF) Conference and Annual General Meeting takes place from Windhoek from 31 October to 2 November 2023.
This ground-breaking conference takes an extraordinary approach to affordable housing with a deep dive into landmark case studies – moving from the realm of theory and into real-life examples of affordable housing success.
Anticipated by international, African and regional stakeholders, the conference brings colleagues from the public, private and development sectors together to share lessons learned and grapple with common challenges in Africa’s fast-evolving affordable housing sector.
This year’s event is being presented under the theme “Affordable Housing on the Front Lines: Cases from the Continent” and takes place both live in Windhoek and virtually. In-person attendees will have unique opportunities to network, access content and showcase prospects to regional and international leaders invested in affordable housing.
Share and learn
The AUHF is presenting this platform for stakeholders to share and learn from first-hand experiences of people and businesses who are making a real difference and succeeding against all odds. The case studies highlight examples from large corporates, small initiatives, the private sector, governments and those supported by development finance institutions.
Kehinde Ogundimu, Chairman of the AUHF and CEO of Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company, comments, “The 39th Annual Conference of the African Union for Housing Finance provides a platform for practitioners in the built environment to share ideas and experiences, network, collaborate and proffer solutions to the housing challenges on the continent.
“This year’s conference will highlight innovative case studies in affordable housing from the continent presented by industry leaders and professionals with a focus on innovative financing and investment, public-private partnerships and affordable housing construction. With over 200 affordable housing delegates from Africa, Europe, Asia and North America, the conference will provide equitable solutions for the collective interest of stakeholders, with the result of making housing more affordable.”
Inadequate housing
Bronwen Chase, Head of Lending at FNB Namibia, adds, “The quality of the lives of Namibians matters. With more than 40% of Namibia’s overall population, and around 80% of our urban population, currently living in inadequate housing in informal settlements, with little or no access to municipal infrastructure and services - access to stable, safe, and affordable housing is a key determinant in helping our country thrive.”
She adds that it is vital that the private sector remains a key partner in the development and financing of low-cost housing and in driving sustainable change.
“A community driven approach to these kinds of investments, not only boosts our local economy, but is essential in job creation, financial stability, and improving the quality of lives and standard of living of Namibians by helping them secure affordable land and shelter. At FNB, ‘how can we help you’, is never more evident than when that help delivers an affordable home, a safe place to live and grow, and to love and nurture our families and communities.”
Continental themes
Each year the AUHF Annual Conference and AGM is held in a different country and explores a range of housing and housing finance themes on the continent. It attracts a wide range of housing finance and development practitioners from the public and private sectors across Africa and globally.
The AUHF is a member-based association of institutions involved in the mobilisation of funds for affordable housing on the African continent. AUHF comprises mortgage banks, building societies, housing corporations, investors and other African housing finance organisations, as well as developers, proptech companies, market facilitators, consulting firms and other housing professionals.
