The City of Windhoek yesterday announced that 105 houses in Havana informal settlement's Extension 6 and 7 now have electricity.
By the end of October, a further 57 homes in the area will be electrified.
According to Windhoek mayor Joseph Uapingene, these houses were electrified during a five-year electrification plan (2017-2022), which lapsed during the 2022/2023 financial year and were funded by the urban and rural development ministry and NamPower to the tune of N$45 million.
"The procurement of five high-mast lights is in progress and will be installed in the following informal settlements to improve the public safety: Havana dumping site, Goreangab soccer field, Eehambo daNehale interlocks and deeper, and Sonderwater," he said.
The City plans to electrify approximately 4 000 households in the next five years (2023-2028).
Uapingene added that the municipality will need between N$15 million and N$20 million per year, and has resorted to asking for funding from financial institutions to complete the project.
