US Embassy marks historic transition

End of an era
The American flag was ceremonially lowered and the Great Seal was respectfully removed at the old US Embassy at 14 Lossen Street last Friday, marking the closure of a significant chapter in the longstanding relationship between the United States and Namibia.
Moments later, the American flag proudly rose at the new US Embassy at 38 Metje Street, signifying the full operational commencement of the new diplomatic facility in Windhoek.
For nearly 34 years, 14 Lossen Street stood as a symbol of partnership, diplomacy, and shared history. The closing of the old US chancery building represents not just a physical transition but a significant moment in the evolution of the US-Namibia relationship. The legacy and memories created in Lossen Street will hold a special place in the hearts of those who have been part of this remarkable journey.
Ambassador Randy Berry remarked on this historic occasion, stating, that “today, we close a meaningful chapter in the book on the US-Namibia relationship, and we begin to write a new one. As we transition to the new embassy, it's essential to preserve, honour, and understand our shared history. The move represents the commitment of the United States to continue building on the strong foundation established over the years.”
The US Embassy in Windhoek is now fully operational at the new site and symbolises the future of US-Namibia collaboration. The state-of-the-art facility is equipped to meet the evolving diplomatic, consular, health, and cultural needs, providing a platform for enhanced engagement between the two nations.
The transition ceremony was attended by embassy employees who celebrated and reflected on the importance of this moment in bilateral relations. With the US Embassy in Windhoek’s transition to its new home, both nations look forward to continued collaboration, strengthened ties, and the deepening of the partnership that will contribute to the shared narrative of US-Namibia friendship.
