Create the perfect summer garden

In Namibia, a good outdoor entertainment area is practically a must-have. Being in full summer mode, creating a beautiful outdoor space not only provides a tranquil retreat but can also increase the resale value of your home.
Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa explains that for many an outdoor entertainment area isn’t just an add-on; it’s a lifestyle feature that is a must-have on their house-hunting wish list.
“This preference has an impact on the local property market, as buyers often prioritize homes that offer functional, attractive outdoor spaces.”
Even if you are not looking to sell your home soon, planning your outdoor space well can have a great impact on the future resale value of your home, so it is worth considering what upgrades will add the most value to your outdoor space.
To help homeowners create the perfect summer garden (and subtly boost your home’s value), RE/MAX of Southern Africa share the following tips...
1) Plant according to the climate
Namibia is a drought-prone country. Indigenous plants will thrive with minimal upkeep, making them attractive to buyers who want a beautiful garden without the hassle and expense of frequent watering.
2) Maximise space by creating zones
Having outdoor space is often a luxury. To maximise every square inch of available space, consider creating separate zones in your garden, such as a seating area with outdoor furniture or a small deck, a dining space, or a fire pit. These zones make it easier for buyers to envision themselves using the garden, which can be a powerful selling point.
3) Enhance privacy
Nobody wants their nosy neighbour peeping over the wall while enjoying a braai with friends. Especially within sectional titles or security estates, the boundary wall can often be quite close to the neighbour. Planting a hedge or installing trellises with climbing plants can create a secluded atmosphere, perfect for enjoying quiet summer evenings.
4) Add outdoor lighting
Strategically placed outdoor lighting can transform your garden into a magical space after sunset. Use soft lighting along pathways, around flower beds, and near seating areas to highlight key features. Not only does this add a layer of beauty, but it also increases safety and security, deterring opportunistic criminals who seek to lurk in the shadows.
“When you create the perfect summer garden, you’re not just enhancing your enjoyment of the space — you’re also investing in a feature that can pay dividends when you decide to sell,” says Goslett.
