Bees – a matter for the experts

One man's pain, another man's pleasure: As much as most people like to watch busy bees in their garden, people don't like having a whole bee hive inside their own roof.
In such cases, it is best to call bee experts who will professionally remove the hive.
One such expert is Roland Graf zu Bentheim, who is a beekeeper himself and knows how to deal with bees. Our sister publication, the Allgemeine Zeitung, accompanied him on a proverbial bee "sting" at a home in Eros.
“Today we got bees out of a roof that is about ten meters high,” Zu Bentheim said, describing the operation. “The bees were very aggressive, which made it difficult to get them out.”
Because the bees were so aggressive, the roofers couldn't remove the roof themselves beforehand, so he had to lend a hand.
“A lot of smoke always has to be produced to calm the bees,” he explained. “Once the roof was open, I cut out all the honeycombs piece by piece and put them in a box where the bees would come in later. Finally, you have to catch the queen, and only when the queen is in the box do the other bees follow. Catching the queen takes a while.”
