A municipal bus with about 50 passengers caught fire yesterday morning en route from Katutura to Cimbebasia and Kleine Kuppe.
The bus driver noticed a strong smell coming from the engine compartment at around 06:10 and immediately stopped along the Western Bypass.
The driver then quickly and safely evacuated the passengers from the bus. The bus was already on fire when emergency services arrived on the scene.
According to the Windhoek municipal spokesperson, Lydia Amutenya, the bus was damaged beyond repair.
Although most passengers were unharmed, two women were taken to hospital with symptoms of smoke inhalation. According to Amutenya, they were discharged again yesterday.
"After the incident, a vehicle was arranged to take all the passengers to their destinations.
"The safety and well-being of our passengers remains our highest priority. We regret the inconvenience caused and we are investigating the cause of the fire,” Amutenya said. – [email protected]
