News from Council chambers

The City Council shared a few highlights from their ordinary council meeting from Wednesday evening.
Windhoek Urban Structure Plan
The City of Windhoek is preparing to launch public consultations on the Windhoek Urban Structure Plan (WUSP). Developed under the Urban and Regional Planning Act of 2018 (Act 5 of 2018), the WUSP is a crucial development policy document for the Windhoek Municipality that will guide urban planning and growth over the next 20 years.
Its goal is to provide comprehensive strategic direction for land use, urban development, and infrastructure planning across Windhoek's entire jurisdiction.
The primary purpose of the WUSP is to establish a strong framework for managing urban growth and land development, including key considerations for infrastructure, such as the transportation network. The plan prioritises sustainable and inclusive mobility, integrating provisions for non-motorized transport to ensure that urban planning caters to the needs of all residents. This document will play a pivotal role in steering Windhoek's future development, facilitating growth that is environmentally sustainable, economically viable, and socially inclusive.
Redundant items set for donation
To support the operational efficiency of regional counterparts, the Municipal Council of Windhoek has resolved to donate redundant vehicles, plant, and equipment to several sister local authorities. The donated items are intended to strengthen the local authorities' service delivery capacity and enhance their operational effectiveness.
Beneficiaries are the village and town councils of Berseba, Gibeon, Okakarara, Rundu, Eenhana and Khorixas. Among the donated items are skip trucks, refuse removal loaders, compactor trucks, portable steel flat tanks, compressors, and pick-up bakkies.
EV charging station
The City of Windhoek is set to receive an electric vehicle (EV) charging station, valued at approximately N$120 000, from Tesla Energy Solutions, a Namibian company specialising in sustainable energy technologies. The charging station will be installed at the City of Windhoek's offices, making it publicly accessible for monitoring usage trends. This installation will also contribute to ongoing research on the integration of electric vehicles into Namibia's transport system.
The donation comes at a significant time as the City of Windhoek continues to lead the charge in implementing climate change mitigation strategies and adaptation actions. This donation not only supports the City’s transition towards more sustainable energy sources but also aligns with its commitment to advancing climate resilience and promoting green technologies within the urban environment.
