In the heart of Windhoek’s central business district, Avani Windhoek Hotel and Casino has stood as a cornerstone of the city’s hospitality industry since its inception in the mid-1970s. In an exclusive interview with general manager Rudie Putter, My.Na Properties delved into the rich history and exciting offerings of this timeless hotel. Originally known as Kalahari Sands Hotel, Avani Windhoek officially opened its doors on 1 March 1975, making it one of the oldest and most enduring hotels in Windhoek.Under the management of Sun International until 2015, the property underwent a transformative change when Meinert International, a global hotel giant, acquired it.
Since then, Avani has flourished as a distinctive brand under the Meinert International collection, showcasing the group's aggressive expansion plan. Putter also shared insights into the strategic acquisitions made by Meinert International, which included the South African division of hotels and casinos belonging to Sun International.
Notable additions to their portfolio were the then Gaborone Sun, Kalahari Sands, the Royal Livingstone, Avani VicFalls in Zambia, and two properties in Lesotho, establishing a robust regional presence.
Thoughtful design
“The hotel consists of 173 rooms in total. We have five superior luxury suites, which are quite spacious, as well as a presidential suite. The bedrooms are really large, and it is a really well laid out and practically set-up space. We also have six business suites, and also 11 superior luxury rooms and then 86 rooms are twins and the remaining are all kings, meaning they have either one king-sized bed or two double beds in a room,” revealed Putter in an exclusive interview with My.Na Properties’ Aina Raiza Kweyo.
The hotel's thoughtful design provides spacious and practical layouts, with all rooms offering breathtaking city views. Each room is fully air-conditioned, equipped with ensuite bathrooms featuring both bath and shower facilities, and offers a complete TV service. Guests at Avani Windhoek are treated to a range of entertainment options, from in-room entertainment with a full DSTV bouquet and Wi-Fi connectivity to a fully stocked mini bar upon request.
For fitness enthusiasts, the hotel offers an on-site gym, ensuring guests can maintain their routines during their stay. However, the crown jewel of Avani Windhoek is undoubtedly its casino, which provides exclusive entertainment for patrons. Putter highlighted the regular live entertainment events, including live music, DJs, and special events hosted throughout the year. Emphasising the comfort of guests, Avani Windhoek extends its hospitality to families, offering rate structures for children and providing cots and small beds upon request.
“The hotel is surrounded by shops, across the road from a craft market, and only a few hundred metres from the city’s main monuments and attractions. Here, you’ll enjoy some of the best views in the city, especially from the rooftop bar, and all hours of fun at the high-rolling casino. For quieter times, float in the rooftop pool or head out to the bushveld in search of big cats at the nearby Naankuse Wildlife Reserve. There’s something for everyone at Avani,” Putter added.
