EP review: Tumi Mohamed's 'Induction'
‘Induction’ is a good debut.
The EP is now available on all major streaming platforms.
When I first encountered the name Tumi Mohamed, around 2020 or 2021, I genuinely thought he was just a DJ and not a producer too – no joke. Because of this, it was hard for me to give Tumi Mohamed a chance. So, when he dropped ‘Jungle Fever’ in 2021, I wasn’t sold. But, when he was billed to perform at Open Season last year, his set marked my favourite moment at that event – courtesy of his song selection. But it wasn't enough to turn me into a believer.
Now, having listened to the ‘Induction’ EP, I can finally say where I stand with him as an artist.
‘Induction’ is a body of work that offers a variety of pure, feel-good vibes. It’s not a project that is rooted in heavy themes or multilayered narratives, and because of this, it makes it possible for even the most basic music consumer to enjoy it. The EP opener, ‘Jungle Fever’ is for the day ones – it was first released in 2021.
Memorable
‘Lombwelange’ is incredible. It is easily one of the standout cuts on the album. The hook is memorable, and much like the majority of this EP, it is easy to listen to. ‘Lombwelange’ features Enkal.i, Slay J, Wholesomezhan, 7ound and Dr. Clint.
Mshizo makes an appearance on ‘Independence Avenue.’ Other artists featured on ‘Induction’ include Lee Deepsoul, Zonesh Musketeers, Kaytee NA, DJ Shoza and Soul Brothers NA.
Until I heard this EP, I felt indifferent towards Tumi Mohamed’s music. I believe a good body of work allows one to see the artist holistically, including their many facets, and now I can confidently say that I respect him a whole lot more as an artist.
‘Induction’ is a good debut.
Another standout element about this EP is its roll out.
Having recently held listening sessions for the project, Tumi Mohamed has also taken to social media to announce a mini-documentary for the EP. “This project holds a special place in my heart, and I hope through these visuals, you’ll get to know me more intimately and understand the journey that shaped this music,” he said. The EP is now available on all major streaming platforms. Here are moments captured during his recent listening session.
