On 27 March, Nedbank Namibia supported the Brain Awareness event held in Windhoek at the Hilton Garden Inn. The event was aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of brain health and neuroscience.

The event, part of the global Dana Foundation’s Brain Awareness Week, was organised locally by the Benguela Neuroscience Institute and brought together leading brain specialists, and medical professionals, to discuss various aspects of brain function and health.

The event featured insightful presentations from renowned neuroscientists and doctors in Namibia and abroad. Presenters included Professor Amadi Ihumwo from the Society of Neuroscience in Africa, Dr. Aminata Sallah-Tjirongo from Benguela Neuroscience Institute, Diemut Amushila from NeuroBloom Psychology, Dr. Joseph Kabongo from Erongo Radiology, Dr. Marthinus Kahl from Namibia Oncology Centre, Munashe Chinyama from Paramount Healthcare Centre, and Dr. Percy Kumire, who covered key topics such as neuroscience, neuropsychology, neuroethics, neurooncology, cognitive development, and the importance of brain-friendly lifestyles. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with experts, ask questions, and learn about the latest research in the field.

Nedbank Namibia’s MD, Martha Murorua, addressed the audience, emphasising the importance of brain health in building a thriving and productive society: "As a bank, you may wonder how we fit into a discussion about neuroscience. The connection is more profound than it may seem. Banking is built on trust, decision-making, and financial planning - all of which are functions of the brain. Every day, people engage in financial decision-making, from small purchases to long-term investments, relying on their cognitive abilities, risk assessment, and
emotional intelligence. As money experts who do good at Nedbank Namibia, we recognise that financial well-being is deeply linked to mental well-being. Stress caused by financial instability can affect cognitive function, decision-making, and overall health. That is why we are committed to providing financial solutions that empower individuals and businesses to plan for the future with confidence, whether through responsible lending, investment education, or sustainability-driven financial products.’

Founder of the Benguela Neuroscience Institute, Dr. Aminata Sallah-Tjirongo, a leader in neuroscience research and education in Namibia, expressed gratitude for Nedbank Namibia’s support in making the event a success:

"Brain health is often overlooked, yet it affects every aspect of our lives. Through events like these, we aim to educate, raise awareness, and encourage proactive measures to protect and enhance brain function."

As part of Nedbank Namibia’s ongoing commitment to community development and well-being, the bank continues to support initiatives that promote health, education, and sustainability. The Brain Awareness event in Windhoek is just one of many ways Nedbank Namibia is investing in the future of Namibians.
