Town of the Year finalist
Swakopmund is one of the finalists in the 2023 edition of the Town of the Year competition.

The three towns that made it through to the final round of this year’s edition of the Town of the Year competition are Swakopmund, Oranjemund and Otjiwarongo.
"The finalists were chosen through social media posts, with the town with the most likes advancing to the final round," explained Maggy Mbako, public relations officer at Namibia Media Holdings (NMH).

Favourite
Swakopmund is a coastal town that boasts an array of unique features and attractions, which makes it the ideal destination for both local and international tourists. The town is counting on its famous scenery and unique features to win this year’s competition.
"We thank everyone who has voted. It is not hard to see why Swakomund is a favourite to win the prestigious title of Town of the Year," said Linda Mupupa from the municipality of Swakopmund.
According to Mupupa, winning will place the town at the top of the list for tourist destinations in Namibia. "Earning the Town of the Year title would be a significant accomplishment for Swakopmund, affirming its position as a premier destination in the country."

Cultural heritage
Alfeus Benjamin, the CEO of the municipality of Swakopmund, says that the "centre of adventure" has a rich cultural heritage evident from the iconic German architectural designs of buildings such as the Old Prison, Swakopmund Railway Station, and Woermann Haus.
"The town has several museums that showcase antiques and artefacts, including the Kristallgalerie and Swakopmund Museum. Swakopmund is also known for the diversity of cultures, traditions, and cuisines that can be found within the town. Visitors can enjoy a variety of culinary experiences, from traditional German dishes to local Namibian cuisine."
The town is also home to a vibrant arts and crafts scene, with numerous galleries and markets showcasing the work of local artists and artisans. Overall, Swakopmund offers a unique blend of history, culture, and adventure, making it an unforgettable destination for travellers of all interests.

Natural beauty
Swakopmund is home to a unique environment where the desert meets the sea, providing visitors with breathtaking scenery that includes the Swakop River, the Namib Desert, and a pristine beach that spans over 30 kilometres.
The town offers adventure activities such as sandboarding, quad biking, and skydiving. It also offers a wide range of accommodation options, with hotels, guesthouses, and self-catering apartments catering to different budgetary needs and hosting multiple events to keep both visitors and residents entertained.
The town’s packed events calendar includes the popular Swakopmund Christmas Fair, the Arts and Crafts Market, and the Nedbank Food Festival. "Swakopmund is an ideal tourist destination because it has something to offer everyone, regardless of their interests," emphasised Benjamin.
