A LEGO week of sport
Loving Every Growth Opportunity (LEGO) is the theme for this year's Napso Securitas winter sports event.
The host of this week's winter sports, Walvis Bay Private School (WBPS), welcomed 15 schools to the Namibia Private School Organisation (Napso) Securitas winter sport event. About 3 500 learners were in attendance. The event started today with archery, chess, jukskei, tennis and the Mr and Miss Private Schools pageant scheduled for later.
According to Henry Kemp, the head of sport at WBPS, a total of 132 netball teams have entered, while 80 rugby teams and 81 hockey teams will compete.
At the netball alone, there are 94 primary school teams and 38 high school teams. The age groups range from under-seven to under-19. In total, 805 games will be played throughout the week.
“We are looking forward to an amazing adventure of school sports,” Kemp said, adding that this event has been one of the biggest he has organised.
In total, the event will feature 450 netball games, 164 hockey games and 191 rugby games.
Well-organised
“It will be an incredible mega feast,” Wouter Niehaus, the CEO of Napso said. WBPS is equipped with the right facilities and will be able to handle it professionally.
“Every school has their unique way of hosting, but the one thing that remains is the high standard of organisation at the Private School Week,” he added.
WBPS has been hard at work to prepare the sport fields for the last four years.
“Hours of planning and preparation went into having it all ready,” Henjan van der Heyde, WBPS principal, said.
He added that the school is preparing for over 12 000 guests to attend the event.
“This is not just a big event for WBPS, but for the whole Walvis Bay.”
Schedule
For tomorrow, rugby, netball and hockey trials are scheduled in the morning. Go-karting is scheduled for 11:00, while the opening ceremony will commence at 12:15. The netball, rugby and hockey matches are scheduled from 14:00.
Friday is set out for more netball, hockey and rugby matches. On Saturday, the final day of the winter sport event, the excitement is set to continue for rugby, netball and hockey.
At 12:00, the announcement for the Napso teams is set to take place. The last matches of the day are the finals for the rugby, netball and hockey.
This year’s sponsors totals 13, with Nammed and Fly Namibia who came on board as anchor sponsors.
“Our 13 anchor sponsors are extremely important to us and they enable us to host these events,” Niehaus said. He added that Securitas has been one of the longest-standing anchor sponsors of 18 years.
Private School Week has been around for 21 years since its start in 2002. “Twenty-one years is just incredible,” Niehaus said.
