Celebrating athletic prowess at the interhouse
St George’s interhouse athletics isn't merely a day of fun and fitness; it's a platform for unearthing new talent. Approximately 35 learners aged 13 to 18 qualified for the Zone A athletics at Sam Nujoma Stadium. This annual event, akin to any school's athletics day, features three teams: Jagger (blue), Fogarty (green) and Watts (yellow).The day is packed with various track events such as 100 metres, 200m, 400m and 1 200m races, alongside shot put, discus, javelin, long jump and high jump competitions, all aimed at showcasing the talents of St Georgians.
Among the 35 qualifiers, three exceptional learners earned spots in the Namibian regional athletics. Twelipewa Mushimba (15) excelled in under-17 shot-put and long jump. Reflecting on her regional athletics experience, she admitted feeling intimidated, but expressed determination to improve, aiming for nationals next year.
Similarly, Jeremy Kissasi (14) qualified for under-15 long jump and 200m sprint, describing his selection for nationals as pure excitement and an opportunity to compete with dedicated athletes.
Standing out among them is Hentu Henning (18), who not only made it to regionals, but also secured a spot in nationals for shot put and discus. Scheduled from 9 to 11 May at the Independence Stadium, nationals represents the pinnacle of competition. Henning's advice to aspiring athletes reflects his drive for excellence, emphasising that third and second places are merely steps toward greatness. The school wishes him the best of luck in his athletic endeavours.
This year's interhouse was a massive success with each of the three teams performing cheerleading dances at the start of the day, while delicious food was on sale for a hockey team fundraiser. The events were met with lively cheering and with great enthusiasm from the stands, filled with learners singing their respective team’s songs and cheering exuberantly. At St George’s, we hope to showcase more learners’ talents and aspirations!
