Debating the value of a gap year
The decision to take a gap year after high school remains a topic of debate among parents, students and teachers. While some see it as a valuable opportunity for personal growth and career exploration, others fear it could lead to a lack of academic progress or feelings of isolation.
Tihaano Isaacs, a former high school student who took a gap year to pursue his passion for football, shared his thoughts on the matter.
“I do not think one becomes lazy when taking a gap year – it is all in what you do with your time off from school,” he said.
"Personally, my gap year allowed me to focus my time towards pursuing my football management career. This meant that although I was not formally attending school, I attended a few short courses,” Isaacs explained.
Isaacs emphasised that a gap year should not be seen as an extended vacation but rather as a time for reflection and career planning.
“I believe one needs to not take a gap year merely for the fun of it – it is a time to figure out exactly which field, if any, you want to further your studies in,” he said.
Pros and cons
On the other hand, some students express concern over the potential downsides of taking time off before continuing their education.
Faith Tabo, a grade 11 pupil at Noordgrens High School, acknowledged these concerns but still believes the benefits of a gap year outweigh the risks.
She said among the potential downsides is that an individual "may become lonely, you might become homesick and you may fall behind academically due to the gap year."
The question of whether or not to take a gap year remains highly personal, depending largely on a student's goals, interests and circumstances.
Some educational experts often express support for the idea of a gap year, as long as students approach the time with a clear plan.
In a 2021 local newspaper article titled 'The pros of taking a gap year', a gap year can serve as an essential break for students feeling burnt out after 12 years of continuous schooling, and offers a chance to recharge and refocus on their future ambitions.
Finally, the decision requires careful thought and preparation. Whether students use the time to travel, work or pursue personal interests, the key is to approach it with intention and make the most of the opportunities that arise.
