Epako Secondary School hosted its interhouse athletics at Legare Stadium in Gobabis on 25 February giving learners a chance to showcase their talents.
Athletics has always positively affected the learners’ education and their mental and physical health. "Sports help to develop leadership skills and equip learners with the ability to set goals and build character," said Mr. Simasiku, the sports manager. "Regular exercise can help you build a strong heart, bones, and lung function. It also helps prevent chronic diseases."
Sports and education go hand in hand – a healthy and strong student will be more focused during lessons and throughout the day. Sports contribute to the holistic development of children and adolescents. "I love sports because it always keeps me healthy and fit. I am proud of myself for winning three items in the interhouse. Despite being disappointed about the time, I believe it is very important to participate in athletics because it helps students have a positive outlook in life," a learner at the school, Totaling Nghilifilwa, said.

Cater to all strengths
While some learners are academically gifted, others thrive in athletics and other sports, and it is important to cater to all students.
Pius Amugula, an athlete, said: "I think athletics is a unique sport because of the excitement and suspense of not knowing what will happen next; this keeps people engaged. This year, I performed poorly at the interhouse because I usually make three attempts and qualify for both. But this year I only qualified in one attempt; hopefully I qualify for zonals, so I’ll practise harder. It is important that students of all ages have adequate sports facilities that offer the possibility of practising different sports in a safe environment."
Participating in sports can lead to higher self-esteem and better social interaction. Not everything should be strictly academic-based. Do something outside of school and showcase your talent to the nation.
