Where talent meets tradition

PK de Villiers hosted its own pre-Independence celebration, celebrating the unity of different cultures and Namibia’s freedom. On this year’s Independence Day, Bernice Swartbooi, a young AS learner, impressed everyone with her unique self-made independence dress.
While many learners wore cultural uniforms showcasing their different tribes and cultures, Bernice’s dress stood out and made a significant impression.
She designed the dress herself. “My mother inspired me as a child by always reminding me where we came from and where we stand as a nation,” she said. Wanting to contribute to her culture as a modern teenager, Bernice designed and made her own Independence Day dress, representing her culture and heritage.

A career in fashion
She added that her grandmother also played a vital role in making the dress unique.
Her grandmother was working on a new project, so she decided to get involved and help bring the dress to life.
“I will forever be grateful to her for making my dress a success," she said.
Bernice said she dreams of a career in fashion.
“I love designing and would love to pursue a career in fashion, but right now, after AS, I would like to do something else, but I would definitely be making money out of it as a side hustle," she said.
Bernice Swartbooi is truly an inspiration to all learners of PK, and she has shown true talent with her spectacular dress.
