Readathon Week: Awareness around the topic of gender-based violence

Hedwig Alfried
Schools countrywide celebrated Readathon Week from 25 to 29 September under the theme 'Gender-based Violence Against Women and Children'.
The cries of our community motivated Tutaleni High School learners to embark on a mission to spread awareness and alert our community to the increasing dangers and cases of GBV against women and children.
On the first day, learners and teachers participated in various activities, including learning about GBV through an article read by their class teacher, followed by related questions. On the second day of Readathon Week, all learners in the school took part in a crossword activity.
This project taught students new vocabulary and correct spelling in writing while also raising their awareness of gender-based violence. We also ensured that visually impaired learners were not overlooked.
We concluded the week with a moving drama that tackled the subject of GBV.
These exercises helped the students develop an open mind and a desire to speak out against GBV.
During Readathon Week, Namibian youth learned about the effects of GBV and the damage it wrecks on the lives of others.
