Sports day success at Duneside High
On 18 May, Duneside High School hosted its annual sports day, drawing participants from various schools such as Walvis Bay Gymnasium, Narraville Primary School and many more. The event aimed to promote sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy competition, while prioritising fun.The day kicked off with a lively opening speech from the principal, followed by a prayer and formal welcoming. The sports events included football, netball, chess and tjokker rugby, catering to a range of interests and skills. The netball matches were the highlight of the day, with teams from Flamingo Secondary School and Walvis Bay Gymnasium going head-to-head. The under-17 Duneside team tied with Walvis Bay Gymnasium and triumphed over Flamingo’s A and B team with wins of 3-2 and 4-4 respectively.
In football, the teams from Narraville Primary and Walvis Bay Gymnasium displayed remarkable talent in the under-12, under-13 and under-15 matches. The under-15 team suffered two losses, but managed to get a victory over Narraville Primary. The under-17 team drew against Flamingo Secondary’s B team and emerged victorious over the A team.
The chess tournament attracted participants who showcased their intellectual skills. Learners faced off in a series of matches, with Duneside High School claiming the title after an intense final against Flamingo Secondary School. The chess matches provided a quieter but equally competitive atmosphere, allowing players to demonstrate strategic thinking.
Rugby, known for its physical intensity, was another major draw. The teams from Narraville Primary and Walvis Bay Gymnasium engaged in a series of exhilarating matches. The Duneside junior boys emerged victorious overall, with wins over both schools. Throughout the day, spectators railed behind their schools, creating an electric atmosphere.
The event concluded with a departing speech from the event organiser and principal. Overall, the Inter-School Sports Day was a rounding success, fostering school spirit and friendships among learners while highlighting the importance of physical and mental activity. All eyes are set on next year’s sports day, with hopes that it will be just as exhilarating as this year’s event.
