Westside High School is bursting with pride as one of its own, Laticia Urikhos, known by her stage name "Nadine", takes home the title of Ma/Gaisa Star Search winner for 2024. The 18-year-old Grade 11 student has captivated the nation with her incredible talent and passion for music and the school community is celebrating her remarkable achievement.Nadine triumphed in the highly anticipated competition, which culminated in a thrilling finale at the National Theatre of Namibia on 26 April. Her powerful voice and stage presence netted her the top prize of N$30 000 and a recording contract with Welwitschia Music Productions.
Nadine, who has been a part of Westside High since her early school days, expressed how the support from her family and school played a crucial role in her journey. “My teachers and fellow learners have always been encouraging. It means a lot to me to have the support from my school as I pursue my dreams,” she said.
Her journey to success was not without challenges. Nadine faced difficulties with her recordings and perfecting her performances for the competition, but her resilience and determination saw her through. "I had to keep pushing through the tough moments, and my school community was always there to cheer me on," she added.
Throughout the competition, Nadine showcased her vocal versatility by performing two distinct songs that highlighted her emotional depth and musical range. Her performances are not just about the music; they conveyed powerful messages to the audience. “Through my music, I want to touch hearts and make a difference,” she explained.
Westside High School has always placed a strong emphasis on supporting the artistic talents of its learners, and Nadine's success is a testament to the school’s nurturing environment.
Nadine's success also highlights the growing interest in music and the arts among young people in Namibia, with over 400 entries in this year’s Ma/Gaisa Star Search competition. As she continues to inspire others, Nadine remains grounded, with aspirations beyond music, including the possibility of studying sports journalism.
