Where Talent Meets Tradition

Zacharias Vries
Pk de Villiers hosted their own pre-independence celebration, where they celebrated the unity or different cultures and the freedom of Namibia. This year’s independence day, Bernice Swartbooi, a young AS learner surprised us with her own independence dress.
Many learners wear their cultural uniforms displaying their different tribes and cultures, but this year Bernice gave us a wow with the dress she wore. She designed the dress herself. “My mother inspired me as a child by always reminding me where we came from and where we stand right now as a nation”, says
the AS learner in an interview with Zacharias Vries. So wanting to contribute to her culture as a modern teenager Bernice designed and made her own independence cultural dress. A dress that represents her culture and where she comes from.
Her grandmother also played a vital role in making the dress unique, she also added. Her grandmother was doing this new project so she decided to indulge into making the dress a dream come true. “I will forever be grateful for her for making my dress a success”, she said almost concluding the interview.
Moving on Bernice also said that she definitely also wants a career in Fashion. “I love designing and would love pursue a career in fashion but right now after AS I would like to do something else but I would definitely be making money out of it as a side hustle”, she concluded the interview. To sum up, Bernice Swartbooi is truly an inspiration to all learners of PK and she has showed true talent with her spectacular dress.
