Brigitte Nambinga’s career path demonstrates the importance of a diverse range of experiences and a commitment to lifelong learning. From her first job as a salesperson at Total Sports in Oshakati after graduation, Nambinga has built a career rooted in her love for human resources and her ability to work well with others.
Her story reflects the important lessons gained across various roles and the calculated choices that led to her current position as a human capital and recruitment administration practitioner at Totus Consulting Group.
Nambinga's early work experience helped shape her communication abilities and encouraged flexibility.
"My first ever working experience was immediately after matric, where I worked in retail as a salesperson at Total Sports Oshakati," she explains.
Moulding professional abilities
She learnt the value of professionalism, empathy and perseverance during that period of her life, which she says has shaped her ever since.
She made her debut into the corporate world at Flamingo Inflight Catering, where she worked for three years as a payroll clerk after starting as an HR intern.
“This experience provided me with a foundational understanding of HR operations,” she says.
Prior to securing her current position at Totus Consulting Group, Nambinga's career progressed to Orange River Vineyards as a human resources officer.
Nambinga highlights how the abilities she acquired in her prior positions are transferable.
"In my past roles, whether in customer service or project management, I improved my ability to convey information clearly and concisely," she says.
Healthy environment
She credits her success in human resources to her strong organisational, communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills as well as her knowledge of employment law.
According to Nambinga, these abilities are essential for everything from formulating policies to settling disputes, all of which lead to a productive workplace.
People-first approach
Totus Consulting Group's strong reputation, encouraging work atmosphere and dedication to employee development attracted her to the job.
“The employment was especially appealing to me because it allowed me to work with a diverse team and contribute to the organisational culture, and I also wanted to work near the seaside,” Nambinga says.
At Totus Consulting Group, Nambinga’s primary focus is on developing key competencies essential to modern HR practices, including coaching, change management, emotional intelligence and consulting.
She recognises the value of mental health awareness and legal knowledge in her line of work, she adds.
Teamwork plays a vital role in her current position, and while she acknowledges the challenges posed by differing work styles and experiences, Nambinga stresses the importance of building trust, improving communication and embracing diversity to enhance both productivity and creativity.
Among the challenges her job brings, Nambinga highlights the importance of creating inclusive environments, attracting and retaining top talent and addressing periods of low employee engagement. She aims to tackle these issues through proactive efforts to improve the workplace and cultivate a positive company culture.
