Olivia Ndinelao Shikudule, a lab technician at the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR), has worked at the national oil storage facility laboratory since 2019.
She is responsible for overseeing general lab operations and ensuring product quality assurance for all petroleum products received at the storage facility. She initially worked for SABMiller Namibia and the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) as a chemist.
“My career path in oil and gas was fuelled by my passion and enthusiasm for making dedicated contributions to an industry that plays a crucial role in global energy.”

Impetus and background
Shikudule is currently in studying management development at Stellenbosch University, which she will complete in November. She holds a diploma in management, with specialisation in project management.
The Ohangwena native attended Oshigambo High School and matriculated to pursue a bachelor of science honours degree in chemistry and geology from the University of Namibia, where she graduated in 2014.
She embodies the motto "quality is not an act; it's a habit", which keeps her dedicated to striving for excellence in everything she does. Additionally, she firmly embraces the wisdom of the Bible in Proverbs 16:3: "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed".
“My engagement with internal and external customers provides me with a valuable chance to connect with industry experts. This deepens my knowledge of the oil and gas value chain, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the industry from a business standpoint.”

Eye-opener
Shikudule’s time at NAMCOR has slightly shifted her aspirations over the years, as she grew fond of the chemistry of hydrocarbons. Seeing an ever-increasing demand for petroleum products and the shortage of specialised professionals the industry faces, especially in the downstream oil and gas sector, made her aspire to pursue a master of science degree in oil and gas chemistry.
“I believe there is a great amount of support and opportunities within the company to achieve my career goals. NAMCOR has a proven track record of encouraging both the personal and professional development of staff to ensure competencies. I, therefore, have no doubts that the environment is conducive enough to enable me to continue meeting my career objectives.”
She urged young professionals eager to pursue careers in oil and gas to network and learn from the industry gurus and mentors as the sector is fast revolving. They ought to continue expanding their expertise and be open to exploring new opportunities for professional development, such as pursuing certifications and attending relevant conferences and workshops in the energy sector.
“Never stop learning and be committed to staying abreast of the latest emerging technology advancements, regulations and current trends in your industry," she said.
She made reference to the following quote by an unknown author: "Knowledge is power, information is liberating, and education is the premise of progress".
According to Shikudule, her career in the oil and gas industry has been both rewarding and fulfilling.
She is driven by a desire to contribute to the industry's success while adhering to the highest standards of safety and environmental stewardship.
“With a solid foundation in chemistry and a continuous thirst for knowledge, I am ready to make a significant impact as I continue to grow in this exciting field!”
