Kristofina Uushona is the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia’s (NAMCOR's) marketing, communication and public relations officer.
The vibrant individual joined NAMCOR in 2019 as a communications and public relations intern, eventually transitioning into her current role. "I had initially planned to only complete my internship hours requisite for graduation, but an opportunity arose within the department, and I seized it. I now desire to make a positive impact and contribute to the growth and development of my country. I believe sustainable solutions offered by NAMCOR are crucial for the well-being of individuals, communities, and the country at large."

Professional debut and responsibilities
Uushona grew up in a lively home and is the youngest of eight siblings. She holds a diploma in applied statistics from the University of Namibia, a communications degree, and an honours degree in marketing, both from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). She began her professional career in 2014 as an assistant faculty officer at the then-Polytechnic of Namibia – now NUST.
"This ignited my interest to further my career in the marketing and communications space."
She is now part of the team responsible for overseeing and executing the marketing, communication, and public relations efforts of NAMCOR. "My role involves developing strategies to promote our products and services, maintaining a positive image, and effectively engaging with the target audience. All these, while ensuring consistency and compelling messaging
across different platforms for both internal and external stakeholders."

Venturing into the oil and gas industry
Uushona ventured into oil and gas to shape the industry’s narrative and reputation, given its dynamic nature. She said she finds it incredibly fulfilling to get the opportunity to effectively communicate complex technical information to diverse stakeholders, highlight sustainable practices, and navigate challenges within a vital industry.
"Being able to contribute to the industry's growth, ensuring transparent communication, and building relationships that foster trust served as a motivational tool."
She made reference to the following quote by Maya Angelou: "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
This, she said, is similar to her unique approach to work, where she tries to get a deep understanding of the target audience by tailoring messages to resonate with specific demographics and leveraging innovative communication channels.

Accomplishments
Having been part of a myriad of projects that played a crucial role in the company’s success, she takes pride in her involvement in the team that spearheaded a comprehensive marketing and communication campaign when they entered the retail space. "I also played a pivotal role in devising strategies to educate the public about NAMCOR’s operations, especially the upstream sector. Working alongside a dedicated team and witnessing the positive impact of our contributions on the company's growth and reputation has been incredibly rewarding."
Uushona strives for continuous personal and professional growth and ensuring a positive impact through her work while acquiring new skills, broadening her knowledge, and nurturing meaningful relationships. "I would like to give back to my community by volunteering and backing causes that resonate with my values. The pursuit of a harmonious and fulfilling life, along with the drive to enhance myself, remains the cornerstone of my aspirations."

Shaping narratives
She advises young professionals in marketing and communication to embrace their skills growth and remain receptive to fresh avenues for advancing professionally. They ought to consider enrolling in certification programmes and participating in pertinent conferences and workshops. "Maintain an inquisitive mindset and never halt your quest for knowledge. Recall that achievement arises from the fusion of enthusiasm, commitment, and flexibility. Always stay abreast of the emerging trends as preparedness meets opportunities."
According to Uushona, her tenure as a marketing, communications, and PR professional in the oil and gas sector has been a journey of strategic storytelling and impactful engagement. She has seamlessly blended industry expertise with innovative communication strategies, contributing to enhancing brand resonance and fostering connections. Looking forward, she is excited to continue shaping narratives that not only drive business growth but also advocate for sustainability and progress in the ever-evolving landscape.
