Juné van der Walt is a photographer whose work is primarily focused on weddings, although she also does other types of photo shoots.
“My work is 100% inspired by your story, your connection, your love and how it all comes together,” she said recently.
Originally from South Africa, Van der Walt moved to Namibia after getting married and has been living here for many years. Shortly after relocating, she founded her photography business, Urban Lens Photography, in Swakopmund.
Van der Walt is a qualified teacher without a formal degree in photography, but this hasn’t stopped her from building a successful career in the field of photography. While it is possible to obtain a diploma in the art form or a Bachelor of Arts in Photography, this is not the path most photographers follow.
Those with a love for beautiful scenes and “intimate moments", as Van der Walt describes the essence of the art of photography, are often drawn to the camera. “It takes an eye for detail and good timing to take quality photos,” she explained.

Navigating the art of photography
Van der Walt, who has worked in the industry for over ten years, explained that her favourite part of being a photographer is “hearing a vision, documenting it and bringing it to life.”
An important aspect of photography is social media.
Using platforms such as Instagram and Facebook is essential for photographers to build their brand and promote their work to potential clients. Van der Walt is an active user of both these platforms to make sure that she reaches new audiences to showcase and promote her work.
Of course, wedding photography is not the only skilled service she offers – she also does photo shoots for couples or even single subjects.
Headshots for actors, professional business shoots and nature photography are just some of the other ways Van der Walt can apply her skill and talent.
“People will always want to capture the important moments, and they can’t do that and experience the moment at the same time,” she says. “That is why photographers will always be necessary.”
Pointing a camera and taking a picture is a small part of Van der Walt’s job – after a photo shoot, she spends many hours editing photos to ensure that the scenes come out perfectly.
