Opportunities abound for Amy
The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) hosted an appreciation ceremony in honour of the Rössing Foundation, whose sponsorship has transformed the life of Amy Andrew, a visually impaired second-year Business and Information Administration student. The sponsorship valued at N$200 000, included flights to South Africa and an assessment at Low Vision Pretoria, a specialist practice that uses assistive technology. She also received a laptop equipped with specialised software.
Amy was born with a visual impairment, but she has not allowed this to define her journey. She attended mainstream schools throughout her life and earned four distinctions in her first year at NUST – despite only having 5% vision.
Expressing her heartfelt gratitude to the Rössing Foundation, she thanked them for the assistive technology that significantly improved her vision and for the life-changing opportunity that allowed her to travel beyond Namibia’s borders for the first time. “I promise you, I will not take this opportunity for granted,” she said.
Director of Student Services, Dr Donovan Zealand, said the foundation’s sponsorship not only provided financial relief but also empowered Amy to pursue her studies with confidence and independence. “Your generosity ensures that students with disabilities can overcome barriers to achieve their dreams.”
Looking ahead, he reaffirmed NUST’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. “A truly great university leaves no student behind,” he noted.
Liaison and Community Development Manager, Maria Immanuel, emphasised that the Rössing Foundation is proud to be part of this journey, adding that they believe in creating long-term impact in partnership, and remain committed to supporting Amy throughout her studies.
“In addition to receiving a full scholarship for the duration of her studies at NUST, Amy will join the Rössing Foundation Internship Programme, allowing her to gain invaluable on-the-job experience. We believe this opportunity will be instrumental in her personal and professional growth.”
