Nominations open for GOSCARs
The 2025 Grassroots Owen-Smith Community Ranger Awards (GOSCARs), presented annually to top-performing Namibian conservancy game guards, conservancy lion or rhino rangers, community forest guards, fish guards or community resource monitors, are now open for nominations. The awards recognise the women and men who work – and walk – in the field. They are the people the late Garth Owen-Smith would want honoured in his name; they represent the original concept of community rights and responsibilities upon which Namibia’s internationally recognised community-based natural resource management program started. There may again be a N$100 000 award for the best conservancy in Namibia.
Nominations should reach the Namibian Chamber of Environment (NCE) by or before 28 February 2025. A small committee, including Dr Margaret Jacobsohn, Beaven Munali and Ronnie Dempers, will select the finalists. Winners will be presented with a N$30 000 cash prize and a framed certificate at a ceremony in April next year.
